Premature ejaculation (PE) occurs when your ejaculation/orgasm/climax happens sooner than you or your partner would like during sex. 20-30% of men experience PE at some point in their life.
PE can present itself in different forms. “Lifelong-PE” is present at a very early age, and can stay for a lifetime. “Acquired-PE” may happen spontaneously at any point in life from youth to the 70’s or 80’s. In either case, it can be frustrating if it makes sex less enjoyable and impact your relationships.
Diagnosing and Treating Premature Ejaculation
While some think that PE is solely psychological, or due to unusually sensitive nerve endings in the penis, there are physiologic reasons that can cause PE to manifest. Some of these include:
- Neurotransmitter imbalances (serotonin)
- Performance Anxiety
- Recreational drug use
- Erectile dysfunction (soft erections)
